Have you ever paid the wages from your credit card?

One of the best lines about business I ever heard was from... (Well, actually, he's chairman of a major PLC now, so might be a bit embarrassing if we name him), a guy running an IBM PC dealership back in the 80's.

He told the audience of peers, "You don't know what business is about until you've had to pay the wages from your credit card".

We all laughed ironically, as I think most in the audience had been there, done that at some time.

Of course, only those who have started a business from scratch will have been in this position.

I was reminded of  this story, when I read an excellent article by a well know Captain of industry, Luke Johnson.

Luke is probably best known for being the guy who grew Pizza Express .......
to  a £500m venture.

In his article, he talks about how he realised during a talk to business leaders, that most were from massive corporations, in feather-bed jobs, who wouldn't have a clue what it is like to struggle and grow a start up business.

Of course, hardly anyone in Government has even the slightest notion of the struggles involved either.

So that makes it hard for anyone to understand what you are going through when times get tough.

With even Mervyn King still sounding like the world will end soon, small business owners can be forgiven for feeling they are in a very lonely place.

But guess what?  The sun will come out again, (eventually) and those who try hardest, will be at the forefront to take advantage of any opportunities that come along.

At Hired Help, we're here to help you seize those opportunities, by making sure your phone is always ansered and you get any business you can!

Oh, and have a read of Luke's article.   He for one seems to be shouting our cause.

You can read it here.

Regards
