During the current economic recession, technologies that offer cost savings and increase efficiency at a time when companies need it most, are surviving the slump.

One technology in particular, an industry expert told TMCnet in an interview this week, is Voice over IP.

According to Jan Linden, president of engineering of Global IP Solutions (News - Alert), the economic scenario has moved businesses more toward investing in technology that "delivers a strong ROI and reduces OpEx."

An answering service, unlike an automatic answering machine with recorded message, will provide your customers phone responses with a real voice when you are unavailable to answer the calls. The question that arises is - what are the specific advantages of answering service as against telephone answering machines? Is this option necessary and more effective than an answering machine or voice mail message?

With free market economy in place, running a business is indeed becoming a complex task. If your business has outgrown beyond certain limits, you will realize the imperative need to hire a phone answering service. One of the challenges for many business owners is to professionally handle all their incoming phone calls particularly when they are absent or when their business is not open.

The Net's Potential For Change

Dr Paul Twomey, president of the internet admin body Icann, talks about the net's potential for change.

In a time of gloom I am an optimist. There is a tide of innovation sweeping the world. Those concerned about how to counter recession and poor financial system transparency should look at how the rapidly globalising internet is changing how our world works.

While the web has changed our lives, we are but on the edge of a transformative revolution which will change both developed and developing countries. The mobile global internet is growing quickly to connect billions of people, devices and things. It offers much greater productivity and lower barriers to entry for users and businesses.

In my travels I see "suits" in Manhattan, shop owners in Hyderabad, tour guides in Luxor, students in Santiago del Chile, Aboriginal artists in Alice Springs, fisherman in Hoi An; all glued to their handsets and the net. This empowerment of individuals, especially in the developing world, is transforming social, economic, and political relationships.

The implications of the rapid penetration of the internet are staggering

The number of people out of work in the UK has risen to its highest level in 14 years, official figures have shown.

Unemployment increased by 210,000 to 2.47m in the three months to July, taking the jobless rate to 7.9%, the Office for National Statistics said. Claims for unemployment benefit in August grew by 24,400 from July to 1.61m, the highest since May 1997.

There have been signs the UK economy is beginning to pick up, but jobless data tends to lag behind other measures. Average earnings, including bonuses, increased by 1.7% in the three months to July, down from the previous month.

The number of 16 to 24-year-olds out of work rose from 928,000 to 947,000 - edging closer to the landmark of one million and adding to fears of a new "lost generation" of young people. The jobless rate among this age group is at 19.7% - the highest since records began - meaning almost one in five is looking for work.
